Overdue Update

Well, after receiving a few emails reminding me how inactive my blog has been I decided to finally sit down and pen an update.  I have been BOG (boots on ground) for almost two weeks.  it didn't take long at all to remember all the reasons why I am so ready to get home.  The dust, smells, long hours, etc.  I haven't been outside the wire now in almost six weeks and I am itching to get back out there.  The weather is changing rapidly, each day it gets a little colder.  We are having to work hard to keep focused, but with just four months to go, its hard to do sometimes.  We have been preparing our Provincial leadership to take a more aggressive preparation for the inevitable spring rains and floods so they can break the cycle of natural disasters and asking for ISAF help.  We've been able to provide them heavy equipment for this purpose.  We are now focusing on getting the Governors and staff to prepare a disaster response plan that doesn't include "Call the Americans" as the first step.  This is tougher to than we thought.  We should be heading out to the orphanages soon, I will do my best to get on these missions and take pictures of us handing out the HA we've received.  Last week we got more than 40 large boxes of clothing, blankets, and shoes.  There isn't much else to report on.  I am enjoying watching the election news from afar, I could go on forever about that but I will spare you the diatribe.  All I can say is where are the true Conservatives?

Trip back to BAF

Well, I'm 30 hours into the trip back to Bagram.  My flights took me from San Antonio to Dallas to Atlanta to Germany to Kuwait.  The USO folks in Dallas and Atlanta were awesome.  They made traveling back to the AOR a little more bearable.

The Army has established a pretty decent logistical center for processing personnel in and out of the AOR, emergency leaves, and R&R leave.  Although their personnel troops are little more rough around the edges than I would expect my troops to be.  They do have an enormous job, processing hundreds of thousands of soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines.

Funny how it doesn't take more than a few hours to miss Melisa and the kids.  It was hard leaving, Melisa made sure I was able to relax and unwind.  I am returning with my batteries recharged and ready to finish the mission in front of us.

Returning to Bagram

Well, the 15 days or R&R is over, I am heading back to Afghanistan to complete the remaining 5 months of the deployment.  Flying back t Bagram is not exciting as flying home.  I told Melisa it would be better to just drop me off at the airport today versus putting the kids through a third "good-bye".  I was up at 0415, showered, grabbed a bite to eat, and kissed each of the kids goodbye, waking them to tell them how much I loved them.  I gavev them one more kiss and hug and I was on my way to the airport, holding Melisa's hand as she once again drove me to the airport.  We agreed that it will be nice to have a one way ticket to San Antonio in April.  After a tearful goodbye, hugs and kisses, I began my 3 day journey back to Afghanistan.

Melisa ensured I had every opportunity to rest and relax.  I am returning refreshed and ready to finish our mission before returning home.  My friends and family were awesome, making sure I had as much fun as I could handle while at home.  I have to say again, thank you to Krissie for helping arrange Melisa and I secial night out while I was home, and to Kathy and Rob for hosting another farewell get together at Midnight Rodeo, what a great way to say goodbye.

I will write more, making this new Windows Live Space my new blog site.  I will keep the pictures on our famaily website though.

Melisa, know that I love you, and that I will be thinking of you throughout everyday while I am gone.  Amanda, Tiffy, James.....keep helping Mom, work hard at school and I will be home before you know it.  There is nothing more important to me than being back home and able to hold each of you.  I love you!
